Background of Baghaichori upazila

The Baghaichari area was previously Reserved Forest. Most of the area is known as kachalong and machalong.
After the completion of the shoulder work of Kaptai Hydroelectric in 1960, the Pakistani government full-fledged the residents of the Kachalong area, despite their reluctance on both sides of the Kachalong river, to the lower part of Rangamati city and Rangamati, Barkal, Longadu, Bilaichari, Jurachari, Naniarchar and Kaptai. That's why in 1963 about ten thousand people of Chakma migrated to different parts of India. Baghaichari area was earlier under the Dighinala police station of Ramgor subdivision. Baghaichari thana was established under the Rangamati Sadar subdivision on August 8, 1968, due to the difficult and time-dependent movements of the residents of this area to travel to Dighinala. Later on 1963, on 24th March the thana was upgraded to the upazila. In this upazila, the Kachalong area was covered in deep forest, where tigers were more susceptible. Because of this, it has been named as Baghaichhari due to various hill rhymes of this upazila.
